First Impressions: Modern Warfare 4

Like many the faithful older generation of Call of Duty fans I have grown tired of the current franchise. The combination of immersion breaking skins and the sweatiest of players pushed me to take a break from the franchise. I only played Black Ops 6 as it was included in Xbox Game Pass and I skipped Black Ops 7 altogether. So Activision has not seen a dollar from my bank account in a good little while. Will Modern Warfare 4 loosen my purse strings?

Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta was available this past weekend and I logged a modest 3 hours. I got a chance to play both multiplayer and the campaign demo and overall I can say I was impressed. Multiplayer was what I was expecting with no major surprises. Got in some rounds on my favourite game modes like TDM, Domination, and Kill Confirmed. Got to try it out with a buddy of mine and we had a pretty good time. The maps where alright, gunplay was decent, and movement felt good. I did feel the time to kill was a bit long, but I can get used to it. Overall, I had fun running around, shooting, and cursing at my monitor. I believe Ground War will be included in the full release which is one of my favourite modes from the previous titles. 

What really amped me up about the game was the campaign. It was what I want to see from a Call of Duty title. From start to finish it was a Hollywood, high octane film, set on the front lines of a raging battle. The mission revolves around your South Korean unit repelling a North Korean invasion. The first part had you clearing trenches in close combat with the occasional hand to hand struggle. The middle of the mission has you manning a armoured personal carrier and taking out enemy infantry and armour with your cannon and missiles. The last part involves liberating a power plant from the occupying force. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire mission. If this is what the entire campaign will be like sign me up.

So, my personal opinion the beta was a fun experience with a single player campaign that I think will be worth the cost of admission. Now will I buy the game? I am going to reserve my judgement until the full release. A lot can happen between now and the October launch date. Let us just say I am cautiously optimistic.
