Quick Thoughts: Ravenfield

Ravenfield has been around for a while (on Steam since 2017) and I really paid it no mind. I am all about combined arms combat, but initially the art style, and single player only didn't have me salivating for a taste. As garbage as I am in multiplayer it's the thrill of the hunt I enjoy. So when a semi-craptacular player like myself kills another player online the high is just that much sweeter. Taking on a bunch of bots sometimes feels like a substitute for the real thing. Like adding sweetener to your coffee instead of sugar. I mean; yes, it cuts the bitterness of the coffee, but it's just not the same. So because of that I never pulled the trigger of my PayPal and got into Ravenfield.
With some of the gaming disappointments of late I thought you know what? Why not? It's not a huge price tag. Let's give it a spin. I have had a grin from ear to ear since making that decision. The biggest reason is the Steam Workshop support. The community mods in this game are just so much fun. Player skins, weapons, vehicles, maps, mutators, I am like a kid in a virtual candy store. I've spent hours just perusing the workshop putting together configs for custom maps. Configs are basically save configurations of the player skins, weapons, vehicles, etc. I found some cool Vietnam war maps which led me to getting US Marine and PAVN skins. You cannot have them engaging in fire fights without the M-16 and AKM. What about air support?? Need a Huey.. I have put together so many specific scenarios. Battle of Arnhem, Fall of Saigon, Mexico's War on Drugs all with proper uniforms, weapons, armor and vehicles. I also have configs that never happened (and hope they never will) like a UN intervention with Russia. So many awesome creators have re-created some of your favourite maps from other games like Battlefield and Call of Duty.
How is the gameplay? Surprisingly fun. You are facing off against bots, but they are not brainless and provide a challenge. They attack positions, operate helicopters, and have successfully 1 v. 1 me several times. I am having so much fun with this indie title. It is developed by SteelRaven7 who I believe is a single person development team... BRAVO...BRAVO...
That was my quick thoughts on Ravenfield. If your into combined arms, historical battles, and mods then I really think you should check this one out.
