Did I Miss Out is a series where i go back and play hype games i did not play at launch. Then I make the call if I missed out, or dodged a stinker.

Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a spider can.. does a thing.. then a web.. something something... yah you get it. Marvel's Spiderman came out to PS4 in 2018 to critical acclaim. We purchased the game for my son who sunk hours into it over the COVID pandemic. I on the other hand never played it. I was a marvel kid growing up. Not really into comic books, but the Fox Kid's Spiderman and X-Men series was my favourite. I would always stop everything whenever it came on television. Spiderman was a great character because he was this nerdy smart kid who gets bit by a radioactive spider and gets super powers. So it was like hey even a nerdy kid like me could be a hero one day. Let us not forget is gorgeous girlfriends as well. So I was a fan of Spiderman, but I never really played much of his video games. There have been a few that came out over the years that where decent. I just never really picked one up. Closest I guess was the now defunct Marvel Heroes ARPG. Even then I did not play as Spidey (I got the founder X-Men pack). So, historically was not into portraying Spiderman in the digital world, but this newest game got my attention. OK so fast forward to 2026 and I see the Remastered version on PC for a decent sale on Steam. Impulse buy. Install. Jump in.

Story

If your creating a super hero videogame you better come with a great story, you are basically bringing to life a comic book. The story in Spiderman is enjoyable and the voice acting is top notch. You of course are playing the role of the main antagonist Peter Parker as he lives his double life of scientist (working for Dr. Octavius) and vigilante. The game does not take you back to the origins as your at a point in Peters life where he is already out of school, living on his own, and a well established crime fighter. Your very first mission is taking out the Kingpin and its clear you have tangled with the big man before.

The main story of this game is there is this mysterious new gang on the streets. They appear to be filling the void of Kingpins crew now that he is behind bars. They are attacking known Kingpin properties and stealing weapons. This new gang go by the name the Demons and they have this weird black and blue energy power. After some investigating by both MJ and Peter the gang is lead by Mr. Negative and their objective is to take out the Mayor, a mister Norman Oswald. Throw in some interesting twists and turns and an unstable Dr. Octavius and the game has a very entertaining plot.

Gameplay

Spiderman's gameplay is dare I say a masterpiece. You step right into the boots of Spiderman and have the entire island of Manhattan as your playground. The game is a a combination of story mode and open world. You have story missions to follow, but also a million other things in New York you can do. Outside of fighting big bad super villains you can bust petty thugs doing a drug deal or trying to jack someone's car. The gameplay movement is really well done. You can swing through the streets of Manhattan using your webs, jump from roof top to roof top. You can use your spider powers to climb up the side of buildings. Scratch that. You can straight up sprint up the side of buildings, its so cool. If you just hold down the right trigger he will just keep going no matter what gets in the way. Spiderman comes with a list of moves and cool gadgets that you continue to unlock more of as you level up. There is a skill tree you can build on to get different abilities or moves. There is also a catalogue of Spidey suits to unlock for the collector at heart.

I was not expecting to play other characters outside of Spiderman, but the game does have specific missions where you play as supporting cast. There are a few missions where you play as the fiery investigative journalist and one time Spidey girlfriend Mary Jane Watson. The missions are stealth based and are around finding clues as to who are these mysterious Demons. You also find yourself in the sneakers of Miles Morales before he joins the ranks of a spider person. Miles is introduced in the story and he has a similar game style as MJ. Stealth with a combination of his self programmed hacking tool. Miles will actually get his own spinoff game that follows this title in 2020.

Although, I still feel the overall the gameplay is brilliant, at times it can get a tad repetitive. fighting 20-30 minions back to back to back can feel like a slog at times. Bosses also have annoying quick time events with just angered up the blood. Also, I totally didn't play all those side missions. There where soo many! Ain't no body got time for that. Outside of those small critiques thought is a super fun to play title.

Graphics

Spiderman's graphics can be summed up in two words "Chefs Kiss". It is a beautiful game with amazing detail. You have the giant metropolis of the island of Manhattan digitized into this game which really blows my mind. At city level you have the hustle and bustle of NYC. Streets filled with cars and buses. Sidewalks crowded with pedestrians going about their little virtual lives. If you look up to study the sky you will see commercial airliners flying over head. It is just an amazingly beautiful game and the remastered version on PC makes it look all the much better.

So in 2018 did i miss out? absolutely with out a doubt. This is a game all Spiderman and Marvel fans need to play. I will be keeping an eye on the sales for Miles Morales to continue the storyline.

That is it for now. Keep an eye out for more posts around my side projects and my collection challenged. Thank so much for stopping in and visiting my site. Keep being nerdy and stay safe out there gamers.
